Small Steps Are Still Steps

fitness habits healthy motivation Apr 23, 2018

When people think of getting healthier, many times they envision hardcore workouts where they are dripping with sweat and exhausted. Or maybe even a big healthy salad with willpower of steel. Never wavering and never eating something less than healthy. While these are all great in theory, reality is a bit more complicated. We have lives to live and sometimes our motivation isn’t where we would like it to be. We may have a stressful day, or not feel like our usually chipper selves. Our typical workout may seem as if it is taking all day.

Truth be told, you don’t have to go full steam ahead each and every day. If you can, that’s great! Keep it up! If you have had an extremely stressful week, are running low on sleep and give in to a take out pizza and a ten minute workout instead, it’s okay. All of your hard work can’t be erased by one meal or one missed workout. I don’t advocate for you to eat junk or miss a workout, but if it happens very rarely the world won’t end. As long as you don’t make it a habit, you will be just fine.

The same can be said for when you are starting your fitness journey. You should never compare yourself to someone else. You don’t need to keep up with them, lose weight as fast as they do, or eat all the same things. Your focus should be on improving yourself. If you can only manage a fifteen minute workout to start, it’s better than nothing. It is a step forward. That step is still in the direction you want to go. There is no such thing as a bad workout. You showed up and did your absolute best, so be proud.

Pushing too hard can be detrimental to your progress. That’s the fastest way to burn out. Constantly denying yourself or pushing through a workout you hate will only make you more likely to give up eventually. There is nothing wrong with choosing an easier workout that you can actually do every day. It may not get you results fast, but having something you can stick to for the long term will be much better for you.

All choices add up. If you make 20 choices that are good for you and 2 that aren’t good for you, progress has still been made. The same can be said of the opposite. Making one or two good choices can’t possibly over turn all those bad choices you have been making. One salad won’t get rid of all the junk food and poor choices. Pace yourself and be gentle. You don’t always have to be perfect, what matters is making good choices more often than you make no so great choices. This will eventually get you where you want to be. Maybe not tomorrow or next week, but you will get there, slowly but surely. Never give up and always work toward a better you.
