Choosing the Right Workout

fitness Nov 07, 2017

Fitness means different things to different people. We each have varying ideas on what would be our ideal bodies or fitness levels. This means that each person’s favorite workouts are going to be as varied as our bodies. We all have different plans and things that keep us motivated, so how do we figure out exactly what workout is best for us?

What’s your motivation?

The first thing I suggest doing is to figure out exactly what your goals are. Do you want to lose weight? Want to build muscle? Or maybe you are looking for increased endurance and flexibility? Whatever it is, it’s important to really evaluate what it is you are looking for. Be as specific as possible so that you can find the best workout to reach your goal.

What is your fitness level?

If you are a complete beginner, you definitely don’t want to start with some hardcore fitness program. Choosing the right plan is important so that you love what you are doing and don’t get burned out or frustrated with it. By sticking with something on your current fitness level, you will be able to keep with it for the long term. You aren’t going to achieve your goals overnight, so you may want something that you can look forward to not something you are going to dread!

How much time can you commit?

Some workouts require you to spend more time than others. If you have a busy schedule, you aren’t going to want to pick something that requires an hour of exercise a day. Look at your schedule and figure out when you can realistically fit your workout in. There are a TON of amazing workout programs that only require you to have 25-30 minutes a day! It’s best to pick a time when you aren’t going to be able to put it off. If you must, set your alarm for 30 minutes earlier (or however long a workout and shower will take) in the morning. Get it done before you have a chance to talk yourself out if it!

Do you have any equipment?

Some exercises require certain equipment. There are plenty of programs that don’t require a single piece of equipment and others do. If you have the money to by what you need, then great! But if those extra items aren’t in the budget, then it’s best to find a program that doesn’t require anything extra. Two of my favorite workout programs, PiYO and TurboFire, do not require any sort of equipment and give you amazing results!

What sounds like fun?

If you don’t think a certain program sounds as though it could keep you entertained, you most likely won’t stick with it. Whatever program you choose, it needs to be something you can feasibly do day in and day out. It needs to be something that piques your interests and pushes you to challenge yourself. This is why programs that incorporate dance or martial arts have become so popular. These are things that people can find fun and that makes them look forward to their workout each time.
